A Case of Depressed Fracture of the Skull, in Which a Portion of the Cerebral Substance Escaped; Recovery

Gunga, aped 5 rears, a Hindoo girl, was admitted into Dr. Fayrer's ward of the Medical College Hospital on the Stli September, 1866, with fracture ofthe skull, produced by a fall from a two-storied liouseon to the pavement of the public road. The external wound wasof a semi-circular shape, abouttwo inches lonir, situated on the forehead, in the median line. The bone beneath was fractured, and the skin driven in between its two edges. The fracture was crescentic in appearance, and extended for three inches outwards, above the left orbit. About a drachm of brain substance was extruded in pulp. The patient was brought by her parents in an insensible state, With stertorous breathing and a pulse imperceptible at the wrist. On admission the wedged skin was gently withdrawn, and the following injection ordered : Brandy Jss., aminoniae curb : Cs. x., spt : ether sulph : ~j.. warm water giv. Enema stat. To be repeated after two hours. Mustard plaster over the chest. Ice to the head. Milk and sago diet. 20/A.?Pulse 140, distinct. Temp. 101?; pupils natural ; consciousness returning ; paralysis; no vomiting or convulsions ?
